Last weekend I visited the Speed family to shoot a special family portrait session. I’ve known Chris and Kate for a fair few years now. A couple of years ago their family expanded with the birth of Grace, and now the family has a brand new addition, in the tiny form of baby Freya.
Freya was just 2 weeks old at the time of the portrait session. I have a one and a half year old and it’s always difficult to remember them being just so tiny! Despite being new to this world Freya was a natural in front of the camera and had her big sister there with her, although Grace was a little bit more wary 🙂
Most of my portrait sessions are outside, which is the best way for me to utilise the natural light. Obviously, with it being winter we weren’t going to take Freya out into the near freezing temperatures, so we did the shoot in Kate and Chris’s house. This, of course, had the benefits of being much warmer and with the option of coffee!
I must point out at this point that I am by no means a newborn photographer. If anyone is looking for traditional newborn photography shots then I’ll be more than happy to point you in the direction of a few that I think are absolutely brilliant! My portraits are more like lifestyle shots aimed to capture the whole family in a relaxed environment, whether that’s at home or at a location of their choice.
Anyway, I’m really pleased with how the session went and without wanting to waffle on too much, here are some of the best snaps from the day.
